Lorenzo Ferraro, a longtime resident of Swoyersville and recently of Edwardsville, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2024.
Born on April 2, 1930, he was the son of the late Michael and Jennie Zachary Ferraro.
A 1948 Swoyersville High School graduate, he attended Wilkes College and joined the National Guard Unit 967th Armored Field Artillery. When called to service during the Korean War, he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Assigned to the 300th Armored Field Artillery with his unit, he was injured during the battle of Heartbreak Ridge. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star, and the United Nations Service Medal.
Lorenzo was a devoted Catholic and a member of Corpus Christi Parish.
He was a member of the Swoyersville American Legion and served as commander in 1954. He was also a member of the VFW Post 283 and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
His lifelong occupations always involved the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment. He did everything from being a mechanic to a supervisor at Pagnotti Enterprises in Hazleton. He later owned a successful business, Air Brake and Equipment Company, in Moosic. After selling the company, he returned to Pagnotti's, where he worked until he was 90.
The true love of his life was his "Dolly," the former Joan Mullsteff. Their love affair started more than seventy-five years ago. They did everything together and were often admired on the dance floor when Sinatra played. Their motto was "Never go to sleep at night angry; life is too short."
His passion was golf. He was good but not great, but he managed to have three holes-in-one and won multiple tournaments with his son. His name is on numerous plaques at Fox Hill Country Club. Lorenzo was known as Mr. President at Fox Hill, where he had been a member for over fifty years. His six-year service on the Board of Directors and his two terms as President came when the Country Club attained the status as one of the best due to all his efforts. He is united in eternity with his many good golfing friends, too numerous to mention.
His brother Sam and his mother-in-law Lilly Mae Mullsteff preceded him in death.
His wife, Joan; son Michael Ferraro, MD and his wife Ann; grandsons Michael and his wife Danielle, and Jeffrey and his wife Lauren; great-grandchildren Jackson, Ryan, Quinn, and Enzo; other family and friends will miss him very much.
Lorenzo's family remains deeply grateful for all the outstanding care he received from the staff at Highland Park and Traditional Hospice, especially Randi, Danielle, and Amanda, during his last months of life.
Celebration of Lorenzo's Life will take place on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Church of the Parish of Corpus Christi, 605 Luzerne Avenue, West Pittston. Visitation begins at 9 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM.
Donations to your favored charity are preferred and will honor Lorenzo's memory.
