Joseph John Hornsby, 77, of Mountain Top, died on May 25, 2025.
Born July 11, 1947 in the Georgetown section of Wilkes-Barre Township he was a son of the late Eileen Mulligan Hornsby and Joseph John Hornsby.
The oldest of six siblings, Joe attended St. Joseph's Monastery grade school and later attended St. Mary's High School. Through the years, he remained in touch with lifelong friends and shared fond memories of childhood days spent fishing and ice skating, as well as high school weekends spent at CYC dances.
Following high school, Joe enlisted and served in the United States Navy, including tours of duty in Vietnam during that era.
Upon completing his military service, Joe worked as an independent contractor, involved in both commercial and residential construction. He found great satisfaction in his work, particularly in custom home building and renovation projects, and greatly enjoyed a few years spent working in Atlanta, Georgia.
Joe's golden years were those spent as a grandfather, during which he was closely involved in the lives of his grandchildren while otherwise enjoying time with his family, friends, and labrador retrievers.
Joe's siblings, John and Patricia Hornsby and Eileen Hagenbach, preceded him in death.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Elena Hornsby Lynett and her husband Gregory Edward Lynett; his grandchildren, Gregory Edward Jr., Corinne Cecelia, and Hayden Joseph; his devoted brother, James Patrick Hornsby, who remained constantly by his side during his final months battling cancer.
Our entire family is grateful for the attention and kindness he received from the staff of the Wilkes-Barre VA Hospital's Intensive and Progressive Care Unit during his extended stay in their care.
A memorial service begins at 11 AM on Saturday, June 28, 2022, in the Chapel at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Hanover Township. A luncheon will follow the burial.
Donations to the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center, Center for Development and Civic Engagement, 1111 East End Boulevard, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711, are preferred and will honor Joe's memory.
