Marguerite Corrigan

Marguerite Corrigan, 95, of Wilkes-Barre died Friday, April 20, 2018, at Little Flower Manor.

Born May 25, 1922 in Wilkes-Barre she was a daughter of the late Luke and Rose McKane Corrigan.

Marguerite was a 1940 graduate of Saint Mary's High School and earned her BA from College Misericordia in 1944.

Marguerite started working at Saint Mary's Church in the Summer of 1944, as a temp, working for Bishop Martin J. O’Connor as his correspondence secretary until 1946. She subsequently worked with the next four pastors; Msgr. Francis A. Costello (1946-71), Msgr. Joseph A. Madden (1971-85), Msgr. Thomas V. Banick (1985-2014), and Rev. J. Duane Gavitt (2014-present). She worked with more than fifty priests in residence and was involved with oversight of the development and management of Saint Mary's Cemetery before becoming business manager of the parish. Her later years at Saint Mary's were spent as an in-house historian as she was able to translate church records from Latin to English. Marguerite filled the house with her laughter until her retirement in 2014 after seventy years of dedicated service.

A nearly lifelong member of the Parish of Saint Therese where she served as organist for many years, she came to Saint Mary's with the consolidation of the parishes in 2011. She was active with the Altar and Rosary Society, Legion of Mary and volunteered her time to the bazaars of both churches.

Sisters, Mary Rose Corrigan Higgins and Nancy Corrigan Conahan preceded her in death.

She will be greatly missed by nieces and nephews; William Higgins, James Higgins, Rosie Ayerle, Frank Conahan, Tom Conahan, Nancy Coon, and Marguerite Conahan; sixteen great-nieces and -nephews and three great-great-nephews.

Celebration of Marguerite's Life will begin Friday with visitation from 4 to 8PM at McLaughlin's, 142 South Washington Street Wilkes-Barre and continue there on Saturday with a gathering at 8:30AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:30AM in the Church of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception. Interment will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery.
