John Francis Murray passed away in the presence of his loving family on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.
Born April 7, 1937 in Newark, New Jersey he was a son of the late John Francis Murray, Sr. and Margaret Ferguson Murray. John attended grade schools in South Orange and Middlesex and graduated from Bound Brook High School where he was a member of the track team.
An Army veteran of the Vietnam Era, John was awarded medals for good conduct and marksmanship.
John was a master carpenter with an expertise in finish carpentry. He learned his trade as a youth and remained self-employed for many years. After retiring he worked for Home Depot in Wilkes-Barre for ten years.
An avid sportsman and outdoorsman throughout his life, John’s most memorable hunting trip as a youth was to Nova Scotia. Later in life John became a snow skier and participated in many Keystone Olympics at Montage, earning medals in his age class. He loved skiing with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was very proud of and loved his family, and enjoyed spending time with them.
John was a member of Lehman Golf Club where he participated in tournaments. He was a member of the Archery Zone where he competed in many events and won numerous tournaments, including as state championship with his team. Using his traditional bow, he became known as the Noble Archer by his teammates.
John was a member of the Church of Gate of Heaven in Dallas.
His younger brothers, Ronnie and Bobby, and his former wife, Vicki Pascoe Wickkiser, preceded him in death.
John will be greatly missed by his wife of twenty-five years, Angie Gagliardi Stets Murray; children, Colleen and her husband Dominick Fresco, II of New Jersey, Suzy and her husband Mark Fueshko of Mehoopany, and John and his wife Wendy Murray of Tunkhannock; grandchildren, Dominick Fresco, III, Kristyn and Jamie Murray; great-grandson, Dominick Fresco, IV; sister, Patricia Carfagno of New Jersey; brother, Joseph Murray of Texas; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
John’s entire family is grateful for the professional, compassionate care he received from the doctors and nursing staff at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Dr. Alan Boonin, and the staffs at The Meadows, Gardens of Tunkhannock and Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
Special thanks are extended to Fr. Dan Toomey, Deacon Tom and Sunny, and Pastor Rick Womer for their spiritual guidance during John’s illness.
Celebration of John’s Life will be held Saturday, November 10, 2018 with a Funeral Mass at 11 AM in the Church of Gate of Heaven, 40 Machel Avenue in Dallas.
Memorial donations are preferred and may be made to the Church of Gate of Heaven, or the charity of your preference.
