John P. Moses Esq.

John P. Moses, Esq., prominent attorney, public servant, philanthropist, and lifelong resident of Wilkes-Barre, passed away at his home on Monday, October 31, 2022.

Born on June 27, 1946, he was the son of the late Peter and Jean Sessin Moses and was the beloved husband of Joyce Nahas Moses and father of Atty. Peter J. Moses, both of Wilkes-Barre.

His brothers, Dr. George P. Moses, Attorney Anthony Moses, and Peter P. Moses, preceded him in death.

John Moses graduated from Saint Nicholas High School in Wilkes Barre in 1964. He graduated from King's College in 1968, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Government and Politics. In 1971, he graduated from the Villanova University School of Law, where he was awarded a Juris Doctor Degree. Upon graduation from the Villanova University School of Law, Moses received the Theodore L. Reimer Moot Court Competition Award.

Attorney Moses dedicated many years in extraordinary commitment to the health and welfare of children throughout the world. He served as Chairman of the Board of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He was Chairman of the Board of American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC), the hospital's fundraising arm. Later, he was chosen to be the CEO of ALSAC, making him the fourth successor to Danny Thomas, founder of St. Jude, in that role.

He served as Solicitor for the Luzerne County Clerk of Courts, special counsel to the Luzerne County Commissioners, Solicitor for the Luzerne County Housing Authority, Solicitor for the Pennsylvania State Police, F.O.P. Lodge No. 43, Counsel for the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, Counsel for the Northeastern Pennsylvania Hospital and Education Authority and Solicitor for the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority and has served as Counsel for the Northeast Pennsylvania Professional News Media Association.

Moses was an active member of the Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and American Bar Associations. In addition, he served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association. He has served as the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Committee on Federal Grants and Regulations, the Government and Legislative Affairs Committee, and as a member of the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association Criminal Law Committee. Attorney Moses also served as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Association of Prothonotaries and Clerk of Courts Judicial Task Force and the Wilkes Barre City Reapportionment Commission.

He has also served as a lecturer for the Pennsylvania State Conference of Trial Judges, Pennsylvania Magistrate's Association, Pennsylvania Association for Prothonotaries and Clerk of Courts, as a member of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Criminal Procedural Rules Committee, Section Editor for the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Newsletter, and as a faculty member for Pennsylvania Supreme Court Bridge the Gap program.
Attorney Moses was appointed by Governor Robert P. Casey to serve as a member of the Trial Court Nominating Commission and served as a member of the Pennsylvania Commission on Sentencing. He served as special counsel to the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Special Counsel for the impeachment of Justice Rolf Larsen.

John Moses has served as President of the Wilkes Barre Lions Club, Chairman of the Northeast Pennsylvania Heart Association, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center.
Attorney Moses was a prolific leader in local, regional, statewide, and national business, educational, legal, and community enrichment efforts. He has served on the Boards of The Commonwealth Medical College, Villanova University School of Law, The F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, First National Community Bancorp., Inc., First National Community Bank, Trustee of the Greater Wilkes Barre YMCA, Teener's League Baseball, AllOne Health Resources, Renee Moawad Foundation, John J. & Josephine Thomas Charitable Foundation, and AllOne Foundation & Charities.

Attorney Moses has been the recipient of many honors. He received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the Advocacy Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and was named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer by Philadelphia Magazine. He received the Luzerne County Bar Association President's Award and the Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen Award. He was also named to the Northeastern Pennsylvania Business Hall of Fame by Junior Achievement. He received the Hope Award from the American Cancer Society and the Donald Dowd Public Service Award from the Villanova Law School Alumni Association. John Moses served as counsel to the Children's Right to Protection Fund. He was honored by the Children's Advocacy of Scranton and received the Commitment to Children Award from the Children's Service Center in Wilkes Barre, PA.

In June 2007, Atty. Moses received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Human Letters from Christian Brothers University, Memphis, Tennessee. In 2021, he received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from King's College in Wilkes Barre.

Atty. Moses also served on the Board of Directors of Highmark, Inc. and the NEPA Advisory Board of Highmark, Inc. At the time of his death, Attorney Moses served as Chairman and Board Member of AllOne Foundation, AllOne Charities, and AllOne Health Resources and a First National Community Bank Director. Mr. Moses served as Of Counsel with the Law Firm of Cozen O'Connor.

John Moses was a member of St. Anthony & St. George Maronite Catholic Church and was a member of the Order of St. Charbel.

Celebration of John's Life includes visitation from 4 to 7 PM on Sunday, November 6, 2022 in the Church of St. Anthony and St. George, 311 Park Avenue in Wilkes-Barre. It continues there with a Funeral Liturgy at 11 AM on Monday, November 7, 2022.

Donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, St. Anthony and St. George Church, or St. Mary's Antiochian Orthodox Church will honor John's memory.
