George A. Dunbar Sr.

February 25, 1932 - October 17, 2017

George A. Dunbar, Sr., 85, a lifelong resident of Wilkes-Barre, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital on Tuesday October 17th. Born on February 25th 1932, he was a son of the late John and Margaret Smith Dunbar. George was a graduate of GAR High School. He retired from the engineering department at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre Hospital. He was a devout Catholic and member of the Parish of Saint Andrew where he was a communicant at the Church of Saint Patrick. He was married to the love of his life, Mary Simon Dunbar, who preceded him in death. Together they raised three sons instilling in them a deep faith in Our Lord, the importance of family, and the value of hard work. They loved travelling to local auctions and their favorite casinos in Atlantic City. An avid Norte Dame fan, “Pop,” as everyone knew him, was so full of life. He had a contagious smile that would brighten up a room. A man of integrity and compassion, he would help anyone in need whether it be as a handyman, taxi driver, or even a baby sitter, he was there. He was preceded in death by his son Robert Dunbar, brothers, Joseph, John Jr., Frank, and sister Margaret Reichenbach. George will be greatly missed by his two devoted sons, George A. Jr., and his wife Debbie of Old Forge and Thomas R. and his wife Carol of Wilkes-Barre. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Karen Dunbar of Tennessee; two sisters-in-law, RoseAnn Dunbar of Hanover Township, and Simone Garren of Wilkes-Barre; his eight grandchildren, Shannon (Brian) Hickman, Robyn Dunbar, Krissy (Jeremy) Sym, Bianca Dunbar, Nicole Dunbar, Heidi (Peter) Burke, Thomas (Heather) Dunbar, Kaitlyn Dunbar; ten great-grandchildren who were his pride and joy; and many nieces and nephews. The family extends their gratitude to his physician, Dr. Huang, and the physicians and staff at Geisinger Wyoming Valley for their excellent care and compassion. Celebration of George’s Life will begin Thursday with visitation from 5 to 8 PM at McLaughlin’s, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre and continue there on Friday with gathering beginning at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in the Church of Saint Patrick. Interment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery. Memories and condolences may be shared with George’s family at www.celebratehislife.com
