Elizabeth M. Austin

September 29, 1924 — November 3, 2022

Elizabeth M. Austin entered peacefully into eternal rest on Thursday, November 3, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Dubois, Pennsylvania, on September 29, 1924, to the late John and Veronica Macko and moved with her family to Wilkes-Barre, which she called home until her passing.

Elizabeth was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School.

Before her retirement, she was employed in the food service industry at Retreat and Clarks Summit state hospitals. Once she retired, she joined the cafeteria staff at Saint Nicholas-Saint Mary's School. This experience brought her much happiness for many years as she loved working with the children. Her ready smile and extra portions provided them with joy as well.

She was a member of the Parish of Saint Nicholas where she happily volunteered for food preparation at the annual summer bazaar.

Her greatest joy was her family and spending time with them. She enthusiastically attended many family celebrations, sporting events, and school functions in support of her children and grandchildren. She could also be found on the dance floor at family and friends' weddings, enjoying a bottle of Miller Lite, watching a Gregory Peck movie, or any and all sports, especially her beloved Phillies.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Steven, Frank, John, Joseph, and Andrew Macko; sisters Helen Mirisola and Veronica Smigelski.

Her children Norman (Alvina) Austin of Forty Fort, Karen (Robert) Rensa of St. Charles, Illinois, Marianne (Bob) Meneguzzo of Southwick, Massachusetts, Jack (Nancy) Austin of Mountain Top, and Liz (Joe) Saukulyak of Kingston; grandchildren Laura (Bill) Duffy, Steve (Kristen) Austin, Paul Austin, Jillian (Brendan) Gallagher, Meredith (Rhett) Nadolny, Stephen Rensa, Michael (Julie) Meneguzzo, Amy Meneguzzo, Jack Austin, Amanda (Jeff) Adams, Joe (Emily) Saukulyak, Janet (Stan) Jadus and Karen (Dave) Gustinucci will miss her very much.

Elizabeth was also blessed with 19 Great Grandchildren Meghan and Sean Duffy, Stevie Austin, Grace, Theo, and Kate Gallagher, Jude, Westley, Atticus, Dexter, and Shiloh Nadolny, Nicholas, Sophia, and Gregory Meneguzzo, Lucy and Joey Saukulyak, Luke and Penelope Jadus and David Gustinucci. She is also survived by her sister Pauline Tomczak and numerous nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Elizabeth's Life begins Wednesday, November 9, 2022, with visitation from 4 to 7 PM at McLaughlin's, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre. It continues on Thursday, November 10, 2022, with a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in the Church of Saint Nicholas, 226 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre. Her family will hold a private burial service.

Elizabeth's family extends their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Allied Services Meade Street Wilkes-Barre's second-floor staff for their loving and compassionate care of their Mom.
