Contrary to popular perception, our service and merchandise costs are collectively lower than other area funeral services. It is only natural that one might think we were more expensive because of what we offer our client families: premiere facilities, exclusive professional automobiles and a full-time professional staff. There was an old model of pricing in funeral service which revolved around the casket selection itself. That model changed in 1984 with the introduction of the Federal Trade Commission Rule on Funeral Service. From that point forward services, facilities and merchandise were itemized. We have recognized the logic in this and adjusted our pricing accordingly. Our income emphasis is where it should be: on services. With this practice, we can offer our merchandise selection to our client families at very fair prices, as we do not need to pressure anyone to garner higher sales.
Through our methodology, we have been able to maintain a below average cost position. Why would anyone want to pay too much for anything?
The above chart represents collective data from our 2008 survey of local funeral directors. Of those who did not violate the Federal Trade Commission rule, each provided their costs for a complete traditional funeral (i.e., professional services, preparation for visitation, use of facilities for one day visitation, staff for funeral service, transfer from place of death, casket coach, casket bearers limousine, family limousine, lead car, flower vehicle, register book, verse cards and acknowledgment cards) from their General Price List and their price for a Batesville Embassy Cherry Casket - a casket we consider to be in the upper-middle price range (one of the hundreds that you can choose from).
We found that when comparing exact funeral selections, matching item by item, that we are well below the norms for the area. Our total price is $3555 lower than the highest price we found and $685 lower than the area average.
