Walter Z. Newman MD

Walter Zeland Newman, MD, 88, of Wilkes-Barre died Sunday.

Born October 22, 1925 in Bethlehem, Connecticut, a son of the late George and Lucille Grey Newman, he grew up in Manhattan after the family moved to the Upper East Side when he was ten years old.

Walter first enrolled at Cornell University where he was involved with the V-12 Navy College Training Program. He honorably served our country from 1943 to 1946.

Walter continued his education earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Dartmouth and Doctor of Medicine from New York Medical College.

Dr. Newman came to Wilkes-Barre to serve as a resident doctor at Mercy Hospital and subsequently opened his private practice there. He retired from private practice after more than forty years and most recently practiced Emergency Room Medicine at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale before retiring in 2005.

Dr. Newman was active in the community and local politics. He served as doctor for the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission and Meyers High School football team for many years. He was a past-president of the Pennsylania Municipal Authorities Association, a member of the East Side Sanitary Landfill Authority, and served two terms each on the Wilkes-Barre Area School Board and Wilkes-Barre City Council.

His wife, Margaret Ziffer Newman, died in 1986. A sister, Aileen Ebaugh also preceded him in death.

He will be greatly missed by his children, George Newman of Orlando, Florida, Patty and her husband Charles Shatrowskas of West Pittston and Grace Newman of Wilkes-Barre; brother, George Newman of Flagler Beach, Florida; other family and friends.

Celebration of Walter’s Life will be held Thursday from 5 to 7 PM at McLaughlin’s – The Family Funeral Service, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre.
